Arizona Rocks: Canyons, Cellars & Cottonwoods by Laura Ness - HerVineNess
Some places enter your subconsciousness so deeply that they never leave you. Arizona is such a place. A flood of memories came back the other evening as we watched a photography adventure episode on the Weather Channel that took us to one of my favorite places of all: Antelope Canyon. Its magical play of light on sandstone can turn even the lousiest photographer into a master of the lens. The trick is to capture the canyon’s ethereal spirit forever in your mind’s best camera, your memory, where you can recall its calming power any time. The program went on to glorious, adventure-laden Lake Powell, where you can gaze for hours at the reflections of fanciful crimson and cream rockwalls in the glistening surface that hides a thousand secrets beneath its slowly evaporating depths. Ah, Arizona, you rock.
There are so many things to love about Arizona. First, there’s that great big canyon, courtesy of Mother Nature, and that other manmade one, Glen Canyon, which I recently boated down, beneath towering fern-covered red cliffs of Navajo sandstone on a morning so chilly, we practically licked the sunlight bouncing off the water for its evanescent warmth. Alighting on a sandy shore, we...

The Old Town Association of Cottonwood is proud to announce a revival of Sizzling Salsa. For those of you who remember the event that last took place about eight years ago, you will agree it had become quite a success in drawing the crowds to the Old Town area for a fun-filled time to be had by all.
Kicking off the event, the Celebration of Youth Foundation is holding a Sick Trick Bike Parade and Contest. Awards will be given for the best stunt at the end of the parade and riders are encouraged to decorate their bikes. Bring your bicycle, tricycle or unicycle and show us what you've got. Many thanks to our sponsors for this part of the event, and for filling the giant pinata to be made by the Boys & Girls Club: Carl's Jr, Walmart and the Business Assistance Center. To enter this event, meet at the Old Town Park by the Farmer's Market stage at 9am.
From 11-2 crunch on chips piled high with a variety of salsa's for you to judge....

Value the Verde - Green Audit of The Annabel Inn

Value the Verde
Green Audit
The Annabel Inn - 3/29/2011
Annabel,
It was good to meet with you and tour your wonderful bed and breakfast. Your
business fills an important niche in this area. Here are my "green audit"
findings with some recommendations.
Congratulations, your operation more than complies with the conditions of
The Verde Compact. Thank you for being such a good role model for other
small businesses.
Conserving and Protecting Our Water Resources
There are low-flow fixtures and appliances throughout which reduce your
interior water use.
The landscaping, while lush in appearance, has a large number of low water
use plants. You also use gray water to irrigate some of your plantings.
You use "natural, green" cleaning products and soaps which prevents toxics
from entering the watershed.
You are connected to the local sewer system for your black water wastes.
Recommendations: Chris Anderson of Eden on Earth Landscaping is to audit
your landscaping and give you some suggestions on the design of xeriscaping
plus gray water use and rain water harvesting. He can help you integrate
your expansion into the natural environment in pleasing and water-saving
ways.
Reducing Wastes
You have recycling at your location to minimize...

Annabel Sclippa speaking at L'Auberge on Eco-Tourism
Article from the Verde Independent
3/18/2011 9:06:00 AM Ecotourism Initiative: Going Verde in the Valley
| |
|
 | | At the recent Verde Experience event, Cottonwood’s Annabel Sclippa tells the crowd of tourism businesses how her green practices at The Annabel Inn bring her return visitors. | |
SEDONA -- After all, it is the Verde Valley. Business leaders from across the area agree: it's time to let the world know that they're going green. This past week, representatives from resorts, hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, the Lodging Council and Chambers of Commerce met at L'Auberge de Sedona to learn what it takes to create a "Verde Experience" for our visitors.
The event was staged by Sustainable Arizona as part of a joint project with SEDI, the Sustainable Economic Development Initiative of Northern Arizona. Funded in part by the Walton Family Foundation, this project focuses on the state's largest economic segment, tourism. The project's objective is to preserve the Verde River and its environs while improving the local economy through the development of ecotourism.
Ecotourism is ideal for this region. Ecotourists seek environmental, cultural, historic, agricultural and volunteer experiences. They look for a "sense of place," and they "tread softly" on the earth. Ecotourists are... |

The Annabel Inn as featured in Wine Enthusiast Magazine
Destination: Verde Valley, Arizona
Stunning landscapes, progressive wineries and innovative cuisine await in the Southwest.
Published on Feb 14, 2011
By Jackie Dishner
Fall in the stunning Verde Valley.
The rolling desert hills and sandstone cliffs north of Phoenix beckon outsiders. Historic mining towns encourage artistic expression. And thanks to the Verde Valley Wine Trail, the region now attracts the wine and food lover.
LODGING: Plan to stay overnight at The Annabel Inn (611 North 7th Street). Annabel Sclippa, the French-born owner of the only bed and breakfast in Old Town, is known for impeccable plating, garnishing your breakfast with edible flowers and fresh herbs. Hopefully, she’s cooking her stuffed French toast. Made with fresh cranberry bread from the bakery around the corner, she serves it with fried bananas and homemade blueberry syrup.
AROUND TOWN: Maynard James Keenan, part owner of Arizona Stronghold Vineyards (1023 North Main Street) and the front man for the alternative rock band, Tool, may have aided the area’s commercial growth with his documentary, Blood into Wine, which tells of his winemaking work with the area’s best-known vintner, Eric Glomski. But you don’t want to miss Alcantara (3445 South Grapevine Way), a 20-acre Tuscan...

The Annabel Inn as featured in The Californian, in an article on Verde Valley's wines and vineyards
Known as "hervineness," California-based Laura Ness is known for her witty evaluations of wine and the regions from which they come. It was quite an honor to have Laura stay here at The Annabel Inn in Old Town Cottonwood as she sipped and tasted her way through our lovely Verde Valley. Read here what she had to say:
